You will be sedated before starting the procedure which mostly takes about 5-10 minutes to complete.
When you fall asleep, the endoscope will now be inserted into your mouth and will ultimately sent into your esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
Your doctor will then pull away the endoscope completely and look for any abnormalities that needs treatment.
You will be asked to keep our stomach empty before the procedure. You should strictly refrain from eating anything for at least six hours before this procedure. Up until four hours prior, you may drink clear liquids only; after that point, avoid all liquids(including water) except for minimal sips needed to take your routine medications. Insulin dependent individuals will receive dose adjustment instructions. Let us know if you're on blood thinners, as they may need to be paused.
Before the procedural examination, you’ll be required to provide written consent for any consequences that may occur during the procedure. It is a fact that complications from an EGD are rare—occurring in less than 1% of cases. Some of the complications can be bleeding, perforation, infection, tears in the gastrointestinal lining, aspiration, adverse drug reactions, and potential problems with the heart or lungs.
After the procedure, you’ll remain in the recovery area for about 2 to 3 hours so we can monitor you for any issues. A responsible adult (18 or older) must accompany you from check-in through the end of your recovery.
