Our Clinical Director:
Dr. Hemamala is a rarity in the world of hepatology.
This quiet-spoken doctor has multiple super-specialty qualifications that are highly useful in the management of liver transplants and critically ill liver patients.
Dr. Hemamala was an outstanding student from her MBBS days with distinctions in anatomy, physiology and ENT. She worked as an internist/hospitalist for eight years before opting for higher training in critical care medicine at Lakeshore Hospitals and Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. She subsequently went on to become a consultant with the Chennai Critical Care Group (CCG) and worked with critical care oncology patients.
She went on to secure the first rank in the state for DM Medical gastroenterology and joined the Madras Medical College, Department of Medical Gastroenterology. It is at this place that she discovered her flair and passion for the treatment of patients with liver disease. Her thesis was, of course, on ” Acute on Chronic liver failure” when the concept was still in evolution. She went on to become a consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist at Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.
In 2014, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She joined as a Transplant hepatology fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2015, a cutting-edge ACGME accredited training program. She did research work on the genetics of liver cancer while in the program.
She is now the Consultant – Gastroenterologist and Transplant Hepatologist in Royal Care Hospital, Coimbatore
Her interests include the biology of Liver cancer, the application of Telemedicine in Hepatology, Fatty liver and NASH and Acute on Chronic liver failure.
