Transient Elastography: The Advanced Fatty Liver Detection at The Liver World
Transient Elastography (FibroScan) is a non-invasive technique generally recommended for evaluating hepatic fibrosis in people who are suffering from liver disease through the measurement of liver stiffness.
It is a well-known sophisticated ultrasound machine for your liver. It measures fibrosis (extent of scarring) and steatosis (amount of fat) in your liver.
It can be readily conducted at the bedside or in outpatient clinics, providing immediate results and demonstrating good reproducibility.
Constraints arise, with approximately 5% of cases resulting in failure (no value), primarily observed in patients with significant thoracic fat.
FibroScan serves as a valuable instrument for the early identification of cirrhosis and the assessment of portal hypertension, potentially offering prognostic significance in these regards.
Steatosis or fatty change occurs when fat develops in your liver cells.
Transient Elastography will assist your hepatologist in learning more about your liver disease and it can be singularly used or included with other tests such as blood tests, imaging scans, or biopsies, which also measure scarring or fatty deposits in your liver.
Who Needs It?
You need a Transient Elastography scan if you have any of the following:
• Diabetes
• Fatty liver by ultrasound
• Regular alcohol intake
• Overweight (Body Mass Index >25 Kg/m2)
• Abnormal liver tests
• Viral hepatitis
• NASH(Non Alcoholic Steatohepatitis)
What Does Your Results Mean?
Fibrosis Result
Your fibrosis result is a measurement of the amount of scarring in your liver. Transient Elastography measures scarring by measuring the stiffness of your liver.
The fibrosis result is measured in kilopascals (kPa). It’s usually between 2.5 to 6 kPa. The highest possible result is 75 kPa.
Many people with liver disease(s) have a result that’s higher than the normal range. Generally, values more than 14 kPa are seen in people with advanced liver scarring(cirrhosis).
Based on your results, your doctor will assess your fibrosis score.
Fibrosis Score | Assessment | |
F0 – F1 F2 F3 F4 | No or Mild Liver Scarring Moderate Liver Scarring Severe Liver Scarring Advanced Liver Scarring |
Your fibrosis result may be overestimated (your liver may have less scarring than what your fibrosis result says) if you have:
• Liver inflammation. A recent liver illness or drinking alcohol can cause this.
• Benign (not cancerous) or cancerous tumors in your liver.
• Liver congestion (when your liver is too full of blood or other fluids). This is usually caused by heart failure.
UAP Result
• Your UAP score is a measurement of fatty change (Steatosis) in your liver. Your doctor will use your UAP score to find out your steatosis grade.
• The UAP score is measured in decibels per meter (dB/m). It ranges from 100 to 400 dB/m.
Transient Elastography results may also be less accurate if you have:
• A body mass index (BMI) higher than 30 (obesity)
• A build-up of fluid in your abdomen (ascites)
• Too little bile flowing out of your liver (biliary obstruction)
Transcient Elastography can pick up/detect Liver damage many years before you become symptomatic.
